'Hateful' online comments attacked by MP (260 Words)

Charlottetown MP Shawn Murphy is warning people to stop making potentially defamatory comments on the websites of CBC P.E.I. and the Charlottetown Guardian newspaper.

Charlottetown MP Shawn Murphy says he expects a lawsuit could eventually result from comments made on news websites. (shawnmurphymp.ca)
Both sites offer readers the opportunity to post anonymous comments in response to news stories.

"I am actually shocked at some of the anonymous comments that are posted online," Murphy said in a news release issued late on Wednesday. "Some are hateful, many times untrue, and potentially defamatory.

Murphy did not identify any particular story or comments but expressed a more general concern.

"The law is clear and it is just a matter of time before both the media organizations and the actual writers of some of these comments end up on the wrong side of an expensive and costly defamation suit."

Murphy said commenters cannot hide from the law, referring to recent cases in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick where courts ordered the release of identifying information of anonymous authors of comments.

"I believe there is a mistaken view out there that the internet is the Wild West, and the law that applies to magazines and television and does not apply," he said.

Murphy expressed surprise that both the Guardian and CBC still allow comments to be made anonymously. While supporting free speech, Murphy said people should have the courage to, and be forced, to disclose their identities.

While he never mentioned PEIinfo, the same is true here....

The Best Candidate for Job (270 Words)

The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all of the background checks, interviews, and tests were done there were three finalists — two men and one woman. For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow your instructions, no matter what the circumstances. Inside this room you will find your wife sitting in a chair. You have to kill her."

The first man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife." The agent replies, "Then you're not the right man for this job."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. Then the agent came outwith tears in his eyes. "I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The agent replies, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. Only she was told to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one shot after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman. She wiped the sweat from her brow and said, "You guys didn't tell me the gun was loaded with blanks. I had to beat him to death with the chair!" ...

New Boots (194 Words)

An elderly Florida couple, Sam and Bessie, are vacationing in Las Vegas. Sam always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots. Seeing some on sale one day, Sam buys them, and wears them back to the hotel, walking proudly.

He walks into their room and says to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?"

Bessie looks him over, "Nope."

Sam says excitedly, "Come on, Bessie, take a good look. Notice anything different about me?"

Bessie looks again, "Nope."

Frustrated, Sam storms off into the bathroom, undresses, and walks back into the room completely naked except for his boots. Again he asks, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different now?" Bessie looks up and says, "Sam, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow."

Furious, Sam yells, "And do you know why it's hanging down, Bessie? It's hanging down because it's looking at my new boots!"

To which Bessie replies, "Shoulda bought a hat, Sam. Shoulda bought a hat." ...

Shinerama raises safety concerns (343 Words)

Shinerama raises safety concerns
Last Updated: Thursday, September 9, 2010 | 7:26 AM AT Comments12Recommend3CBC News
Charlottetown police will meet with the organizers of this year's Shinerama fundraiser over concerns that it became dangerous earlier this week.

Deputy police chief Gary McGuigan said some of the students were too enthusiastic. (CBC)
Police received several complaints from motorists who were stopped by UPEI students participating in Shinerama, whom police described as too enthusiastic.

"Kids have become a bit more aggressive and caught up in the moment, and now they're actually travelling out on the travel portion of the highways to gather up donations," said deputy chief Gary MacGuigan.

"They're walking out between vehicles so it's become unsafe."

One day this week UPEI students raised more than $26,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The students told CBC News they didn't see a problem with going out on to the street.

"P.E.I. drivers are very kind," said one.

"They do understand that this is Shinerama, they know it means we're going back to school. It happens every year. So as I said, we try our best to be as safe as we can, but we do go into traffic."

MacGuigan said there are other groups that do road-side fund raisers, but in those cases, the road is either closed, or the groups have safety gear like reflective vests and pylons.

Tracey Adams, manager of special events with the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, said the students aren't supposed to go on the road.

"There are excited students out there and we can't control everything at 65 locations across Canada," said Adams.

"They are trained over and over again - at several conferences, manuals and stuff like that - they're not to lean over, not to pass boxes across streets, not to go into intersections."

Adams said the foundation will be extra careful to stress to next year's organizers in Charlottetown that the event is to take place on the sidewalk, not on the road....

Opinions needed on the proper temperature in my attic. (129 Words)

Any house builders or home ventilating consultants out there? Our early 70's bungalow always had a very hot attic in the summer. It was vented on both gable ends at the very top of the apex. This meant the house was vented east and west. Last summer I renovated and the contractor suggested closing off the older vents and installing foam vents along the front and rear eaves. I believe they are called tru-vents and the house is now vented north and south. . The attic still seems very hot. I placed a thermometer up there on a typical summer day a month ago.
It was a sunny day and the outside temp reached 23 degrees. The attic reached 41!

Yesterday my green bin was tagged and refused because I used oxo-biodegradable bags that I bought at the Dollarama. (They are made in Canada BTW.) After calling IWM, I was told they only accept the ones with the stamps on the bags, i.e. BioPack??, one brand only which is purchased in the grocery stores, etc.

Those bags cost about $5.99 as opposed to these which cost about $1.25. It seems we are supporting this one company. It certainly doesn't seem fair to support one company and not the other.

Any opinions out there? <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes" />...

What do you commit to do in the next month or so, or what have you already done in the last week or so ?

PEI's Beer Blog - P's and Q's (92 Words)

As the "PEI Beer Guy", I have started "P's and Q's". It's the exploration for, and reviews of, beer by an Islander (who therefore has less selection than much of the world). I want to popularize and push new-to-Islander craft beers, and become a resource for learning about such brews and beer in general.
Feel free to check it out & post any comments / suggestions.

Laptop for Computer Science student (156 Words)

It seems I've ended up registering in computer science for the upcoming year at UPEI... funny how these things happen . Anyway, that puts me in the market for a laptop. I'd like something to last through the end of the (4-year) program. The most demanding thing I think it will have to cope with will be IDEs running on virtualizations or some 3D modeling.

My current machine is a Mac with OS X 10.5 and Debian 5, 2 GB RAM, 2.13 GHz, and a 150 GB HD. Think I might be able to get away with just upgrading to 4 GB RAM and leaving it at that? Any other advice would be appreciated, even on unrelated topics about computer science as a discipline; I'm quite a noob, to be honest. Remember that I'm a student - opportunities to learn are as warmly embraced as advice....
