Why is it that most of the drivers here don't know the rules of the road or just don't have any sense of the world outside of their vehicle. I think the majority of the island drivers have never driven on a divided highway or interstate. People, the bypass now has 2 lanes if you haven't realized which means you drive in the right lane and use the left lane to pass, but for some reason Islanders can't grasp this simple concept even when there are posted signs.
I can't understand why you would want to drive as close as possible to opposing traffic especially during the winter when roads could be snow covered. Also when turning unto a 2 lane highway or merging onto it, the correct procedure is to enter or merge into the closest lane but for some reason islanders would rather cross all lanes of traffic so they can again drive in the passing lane at 20 KMH below the posted speed limit. People, get with the program and look outside your car when driving!!!

I agree with your statement. However, are there signs posted up on this new section about the "drive in the right lane and use the left lane to pass"?
I can't recall seeing any. Perhaps I just missed them while i was on my cell the other day.

The bridge has signs for "slower traffic keep right", not sure if they put them on the bypass or not though

There aren't signs but I think this every single time I drive up there. I'll drive in the right lane, going a normal speed, but end up passing a whole line of cars in the left one because they're going too slow. I'm pretty sure this is probably illegal, but I don't know what else to do. Am I meant to drive in the right lane at a slower pace than all the cars in the left lane that shouldn't be there in the first place?

And absolutely no one pays attention to them.

I agree in general but to be honest, the bypass is unlike a divided highway in that there are too many left turning lanes.

Sometimes when you know you are going to be making a left turn ahead, you get into (or turn into or stay in...) the left lane earlier than needed instead of having to switch lanes at the last moment.

I have never driven to Halifax where the left lane from Amherst to Halifax was empty

I know I am in the minority, but I just don't find the drivers on PEI that bad. Some people make very slow and tentative turns, but I'd rather drive here than many other places in Canada I have driven.

That's a valid observation ... but what about the drivers I sometimes follow who have been driving in the left hand lane all the way from the hospital (maintaining a decent speed) who suddenly veer to the right at the last minute to take the exit to Sear's? All along, they knew they would eventually be turning right but yet they stayed in the left lane (and I've seen this also when there was little or no slow moving traffic in the right lane that they might have been passing).

Oh I'm not defending every driver, just throwing out possible explanations.

I agree that there are idiot drivers who just defy explanation.

Unfortunately, they aren't limited to the Island

My peeve are the drivers who speed up so you can't lane change ahead of them, or when you are merging on to the same road. Then are all bent out of shape when you do.
Also the left lane is not there for simply speeding either, though I do agree people should keep right, and dissagree with the notion of staying in the left lane because you are turining left down the road. That's what that lane change maneuver when you get handy to your turn off is for.

Drove the bypass today and for the record, there are no signs up to say, "Keep Right except to Pass".

I dove on the left.

Sign's on North River causeway. Although not really the by-pass, it's all the same highway. Glad you "dove" on the left. Just goes to show that some people don't have any common sense. Don't worry, you are in the majority!

I drive on the left all the time on the bypass, unless I am turning off to the right. I do the limit or slightly more depending on how traffic is going. I don't give a s#!t about people who want to go faster. If they do they can pass, and if there's nowhere to pass they can suck my tailpipe. =D>

If there are no signs indicating slower traffic keep right, then I don't. The highways on PEI are quite different then in other provinces, main difference is no exit ramps. Most highways here have right turn options and left turn options quite frequently, so common sense indicates that if you will be turning left at an upcoming set of lights or an intersection, you stay in the left lane.

Ironically, there are signs up on the highways reminding people that LEFT TURNING VEHICLES IN CENTER LANE. In case people forget and assume that the left lane is for the faster traffic. A sign that says left turning vehicles in center lane is as basic as it gets. Nothing to misinterpret there.

Doesn't mean they are ok to of been in the left lane for the whole of the highway. It is a warrning to other drivers that there may be turners in the left lane, when they are nearing their turn off. As basic as it gets. A sign is not required for a law to be true.

There is no need for signs to communicate basic rules. Are there signs at every set of 4 way stop intersections indicating that when 2 vehicles arrive at the same time then the car on the right has the right of way?

Found this article on the net.
